Backpacking Background:
I have been an avid backpacker in excess of 30 years and have hiked extensively in the U.S. I attempted a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2001 but, due to injury I had to abort that attempt. But am planning another attempt. I have also completed a thru-hike of The Old Loggers Path here in Pa. I began backpacking in my youth with the Boy Scouts. I haven't looked back yet. I have done numerous overnight and week long hikes. I try to keep my pack as light as possible but mostly I do not succeed.

d. The trip the pack was used on was in excess of 500 miles on the Appalachian Trail in the spring of 2001. It was an aborted thru-hike attempt. The pack was used every day therefore a good test was conducted. The Alpine had a few minor glitches in the beginning. When bought it was sized wrong for me by the dealer I bought it from causing minor problems with comfort. This was corrected by purchasing and installing the proper sized suspension. Also during the use of the pack it was found to be riding with a slant with the top to the right. I was unable to correct this problem in the field and thus I called Dana and spoke to customer service about the problem I was having. I sent the pack to Dana for repair. Dana customer service was more than helpful. Also they shipped me a loaner pack while the Alpine was returned for repair. After a two week wait I received the pack back into my possession at Trail Days in Damascus, Va. The Dana reps in attendance assisted me with refitting the pack. I was pleased to learn that the aluminum stay was inserted wrong at the dealer, and that they had repaired some minor puncture holes from placing sharp objects in the pack at no charge to me. After all the initial problems were corrected I found the pack to be both comfortable and durable.
Summary
The Alpine LTW is a very durable and versatile pack. It holds up well to the rigors of everyday trail use. The pack also will handle weight well without compromising comfort. There are many different sized suspension systems to fit the pack to a wide range of hikers. I consistently loaded the pack with 50lb/23 kg and found that the comfort and carrying ability did not suffer. I found the 5000 cu. in/82 liters to be more than adequate for week-long sections of the Appalachian Trail. Customer service is more than excellent, they are fast to address concerns and go the extra mile to make sure the owner is happy with their product. I have since used the pack on a number of overnight and week-long trips and have found that the pack is still in great shape. No adverse wear noted. All seams and stitching are still intact and all zippers are still functioning as when the pack was new. The pack is water repellent but not water proof,. therefore all items in the pack that should be kept dry should be protected by the use of stuff sacks or plastic bags. The daisy chain and ice axe loops make great attachment points for lashing items to the outside of the pack. The water bottle pockets are a bit of a struggle to get to while wearing the pack. Adjusting the suspension on the pack is easily accomplished in the field by way of hook and loop fastners on the shoulder straps and hip belt. The Beavertail Shovit shovel/compression panel makes a great place to stach a rain jacket or light jacket.
Packing the Alpne LTW
There's no one right answer to this question: The answer depends on where you're going to hike. General principle: lighter-weight items go at the bottom; heavier items at the top and close to your body. However, if you are going to be scrambling or hiking off-trail on rough terrain or snow, you might want to pack some of the heavier items a little lower to bring down your center of gravity.
